Brush with royalty

I have been watching the lead-up to the Queen’s funeral and I commiserate with you all about the loss of a good woman. She certainly put in a long stint and lived through interesting times. Even Pope theses days gets to retire!

I do feel like she was a part of my family as she’s been on the throne since I was born and for many years through the 1950’s and 1960’s Ireland hadn’t a national television broadcaster so all our television came from a mast in Crystal Palace, London. It was the BBC and ITV that we grew up assimilating. English culture, Top of the Pops, Dr. Who, Match of the Day, British pop and rock music and the royal family were the norm for a teenager in those years.

I had a moment with her, the queen, you know………. just the two of us?

But she’s probably forgotten all about it. I mean, she meets so many people.

I was driving back from my daughter’s creche in 1992 at about five in the evening. My road at that location ran parallel with the A3, just as it neared New Malden.  So there I was with baby in the rear car seat and driving home and I looked over at the motorway. There matching my speed perfectly was a black limousine with motorcycle outriders. The Queen sat in the back gazing out of the window and spotted me driving along and just for a moment our eyes met. She sat there with her black hat on, expressionless. We sat watching each other for about ten seconds before my road took a turn to the left. Her car proceeded sedately onwards, London bound.

Does that count as a meeting?

Have you guys got any close Royal encounter stories?
